  • Poland, a Communist country, was visited by Pope John Paul II.  Poland is also the birthplace of the Pope.
  • Venezuela claims its first title in the Miss Universe pageant in the person of Maritza Sayalero.  The stage accidentally crashed as press photographers and contestants rushed to greet the winner.
  • "My Sharona" by The Knack was the year’s biggest single.  The record was said to be the one that killed disco in that era.
  • Billy Joel scored multiple Grammy wins with his hit ballad, "Just The Way You Are".
  • Kramer vs. Kramer, a film which starred Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep, claims Best Picture in the Oscars.
  • Galaxian became the first arcade video game in color.
  • William Styron publishes Sophie’s Choice which eventually became a film in the early 80s starring Meryl Streep.

1979 - The Smashing Pumpkins

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
You and I should meet
Junebug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we’d never see an end to it all
And I don’t even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don’t know
Just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
Melloncollie Double cross the vacant and the bored
They’re not sure just what we have in store
Morphine city slippin dues down to see
That we don’t even care as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we’d go, beneath the sound of hope
Justine never knew the rules,
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made, I know you better than you fake it
To see that we don’t even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don’t know just where our bones will rest
To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below
The street heats the urgency of sound
As you can see there’s no one around

28th Birthday Wishlist

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

Today is the first day of my supposed summer "vacation".  I swore to myself that I will not do anything academic-related.  Six days of self-indulgence is truly something I’m looking forward to.  As I turn 28 on Saturday, let me share with you my birthday wishlist.  Again, let me emphasize–WISHlist…libre naman mangarap, diba?

  • A laptop computer
  • An i-POD
  • My own car (I am happy with a Honda Civic, sige na nga, kahit KIA PRIDE.  Even though I have my father’s FX, I want to prove it that I can make it on my own).
  • My own bachelor’s pad in the Greenbelt area or better yet…
  • My own villa in  Tuscany, Italy and/or Provence, France (city life in Manila has drained every drop of well-being out of me).

Realistically, these are the only things my frail human powers can muster in the time being:

  • A good lunch/dinner is a non-fastfood place;
  • A nice movie to watch (Sunshine and The Reaping both open on my birthday);
  • A birthday cake for myself (Think of Red Ribbon or Becky’s Kitchen);
  • A loot of VCDs from Tower Records to keep me company until Monday (Blood Diamond is my latest purchase)
  • BeyoncĂ©’s repackaged "B’Day" album hits the stores on April 16.  Her collaboration with Shakira called "Beautiful Liar" is very catchy.  Bday__deluxe_editionThe said single made chart history last week as it made the biggest leap ever in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart: from #94 to #3.  I have this strong feeling that it will reach the zenith soon.  The deluxe edition of the album comes with a DVD of the videos of the various singles culled from it.
  • Some new shirts, and maybe, a new pair of pants.
  • Perhaps, a new pair of shoes.  Damn, those new Nike Air Force 25s are really sleek!  If only I have time to play ball…but I guess, I can only afford it after I have paid my pension plan premiums due next month and other bills.

50centindaclub_1This next song was perched on top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart on my birthday back in 2003.  Just love the catchy bass and chorus despite the foul language…but still, I would like to dedicate it to myself. Lol.  Here’s to turning 28…here’s to turning older and wiser… :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

In Da Club - 50 Cent

[50 Cent]
Go, go, go, go
Go, go, go shawty
It’s your birthday
We gon’ party like it’s yo birthday
We gon’ sip Bacardi like it’s your birthday
And you know we don’t give a fuck
It’s not your birthday!

[Chorus] (2x)
You can find me in the club, bottle full of bub
Look mami I got the X if you into taking drugs
I’m into having sex, I ain’t into making love
So come give me a hug if you into to getting rubbed

[Verse]
When I pull out up front, you see the Benz on dubs
When I roll 20 deep, it’s 20 knives in the club
Niggas heard I fuck with Dre, now they wanna show me love
When you sell like Eminem, and the hoes they wanna fuck
But homie ain’t nothing change hold down, G’s up
I see Xzibit in the Cutt that nigga roll that weed up
If you watch how I move you’ll mistake me for a playa or pimp
Been hit wit a few shells but I dont walk wit a limp
In the hood then the ladies saying "50 you hot"
They like me, I want them to love me like they love ‘Pac
But holla in New York them niggas’ll tell ya im loco
And the plan is to put the rap game in a choke hold
I’m feelin’ focused man, my money on my mind
I got a mill out the deal and I’m still on the grind
Now shawty said she feeling my style, she feeling my flow
Her girlfriend wanna get bi and they ready to go

[Chorus] (2x)

[Bridge]
My flow, my show brought me the doe
That bought me all my fancy things
My crib, my cars, my pools, my jewels
Look nigga I got K-Mart and I ain’t change

[Verse]
And you should love it, way more then you hate it
Nigga you mad? I thought that you’d be happy I made it
I’m that cat by the bar toasting to the good life
You that faggot ass nigga trying to pull me back right?
When my junk get to pumpin in the club it’s on
I wink my eye at ya bitch, if she smiles she gone
If the roof on fire, let the motherfucker burn
If you talking bout money homie, I ain’t concerned
I’m a tell you what Banks told me cause go ‘head switch the style up
If the niggas hate then let ‘em hate
Watch the money pile up
Or we go upside there wit a bottle of bub
You know where we fucking be

[Chorus] (2x)

[Talking]
(laughing) Don’t try to act like you ain’t know where we been either nigga
In the club all the time nigga, its about to pop off nigga
